BOOKMAKING RAIDS.
CHRISTCH URCH ARRESTS.
VISITS TO THREE HOTELS
VARIOUS CHARGES RESULT.

The police to-day carried out further raids in connection with alleged breaches of the Gaming Act. Three hotels weire included in the raids, and also a tobacconist's shop. The hotels were the Masonic, White Hart and Al.
Subsequently four men, a youth and a woman were brought Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M , in the Magistrate's Court and charged as follows: — Eunice Brown (otherwise Miss Hobbs, a barmaid, aged 42, was charged that on January 12, she entered up a bet upon a horse race, the President's Cup Handicap, at the Timaru Trotting Club s Meeting.
Herbert George Taylor was charged with carrying on the business of ai bookmaker on January 19. William Stanton was charged that on January 23, at Christchurch, being the occupier of premises at No. 106, Cashel Street, he used them as a common gaming house.
Murray Edward Best McCleary was charged with assisting in conducting the business of a common gaming house, the premises known as 106, Cashel Street, Christchurch, and occupied by William Stanton.
Frederick Alfred Fox, barman, aged 53, was charged with having the use of the public bar of the White Hart Hotel he did use the same as a common gaming house. William Frederick Kiddey, a barman, aged 58, was charged with having the use of the bottle store of the A 1 Hotel, he used the same as a common gaming house.
All were remanded until Tuesday, January 29. Bail was allowed.
