NEW POLICE CHIEF.
REFORMS INTRODUCED. DUTIES OF DETECTIVES. LONDON, Jan. 7. Viscount Byng, the new Police Commissioner, has tightened up the acti\ities of Scotland Yard.
Beginning to-day a force of detecti\es rill bo on duty at the yard throughout the 24 hours. In the past the responsibilities of the Criminal Investigation Department reased at 11 p.m., when they were taken over hv a uniformed officer, who telephoned to the chiefs if anything untoward occurred. Undfir the new scheme a staff of detective;! will be on duty all night, the number varying according to circumprances.. 1 Byng is also planning closer cooperation between the uniformed and the flain-clothes police. Street telephone hoses :vs ill ije installed to give direct eom*!>un;cation with the nearest police station. / This will enable a patrolling constable s J urgent call to be quickly and approI priatelv handled.
