CHANNEL TUNNEL.

VIEW OF GOVERNMENT. STATEMENT ANTICIPATED. fßeceived .January 16. 6.5.> p.m.) British Wireless. BfJGBY, Jan. 15. Ifc is expected that when Parliament reassembles the Government will make a statement about its altitude toward the proposed construction of a tunnel beneath the English Channel. Before Parliament adjourned for Christmas a motion was presented by members of all parties urging tha Government to assent to the project. It its not likely that the Government will be able to spare time for a discussion of the motion, but it is anticipated that its statement will be made at question time. Views on the subject are being obtained on the one hand from the Committee of Imperial Defence, «nd on the other hand from the Board of Trade and the Ministry of Transport. The two departments named are preparing data as to cross-Channel traffic, and the effect of the proposed tunnel on tho railways, its prico and similar inftttciis, Ji is believed, however, that the opinion of naval and military experts will be found to be still adverse to the scheme.
