GROUNDING OF STEAMER.
LACK OF DUE CARE SHOWN. DECISION OF NAUTICAL COURT. [bt telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday. The decision of the Nautical Court which inquired into the stranding of tho costal steamer Invercargill at Ohau Point last December was delivered to-day. In the course of the decision the Court stated:—
"The log had' not been streamed and no soundings had been taken. Having regard to the thick weather prevailing and to the fact that the vessel was approaching a dangerous shore, the line of which was gradually converging on to the ship, and that no land or light had been sighted, and to the fact that the currents in and near Cook Strait are known to be erratic, we are of opinion that the master, Captain J. J. Smith, showed some lack of due care in not streaming hi 3 log and in not taking a sounding or soundings. These combined precautions, if taken, would prcbably have avoided the grounding.
"We make an order that the master pay the sum of £5 5s toward the cost of the inquiry." Mr. J. Prendeville appeared for the Marine Department and Mr. E. Parry for the master of the ship.
