The death occurred yesterday of Mr. ■George Stewart, aged 82 years, a pioneer of the Ramarama district, where he resided for over 50 years. Born ..t Falkirk, Glasgow, Scotland, Mr. Stewart came to New Zealand with his wife and family 53 years ago. The voyage was an adventurous one. The family left England first in the ship Brodrick Castle, but a storm struck the vessel in the Bay of Biscay and dismasted her. One sailor was killed and one had a leg broken by the falling spars. All masts went by the board, and for several days tho vessel drifted helplessly. Finally another vessel towed her back to England. A further delay occurred to Mr. Stewart and his family through one of the children contracting an illness, which necessitated a considerable period in quarantine.

Finally they re-embarked on tho Babinglon Castle, and arrived at Auckland. On the way out, however, fever broke out among the ship's company, and there were several deaths. On arrival at Auckland, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart had thus again to go into quarantine with the others. At the expiry of the quarantine period, they proceeded to Ramarama. then known as Mrtketu, where they joined Mr. Stewart's brother, Mr. Nathan Stewart. Mr Stewart resided there until two years ago, when advancing age and destruction of his house by fire led him to take up his residence with a daughter, Mrs. J. McDonald, Ruuciman. lie took a keen interest tn matters pertaining to the district, and served for a period as chairman of the Opaheke Road Board. He was also chairman of tho school committee at. Ramarama. Mrs. Stewart died in 1918. There are four sons and four daughters, 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
