ASSAULT AT PAEROA.
MAN ATTACKED IN DOMAIN. KNOCKED DOWN . AND KICKED. VICTIM'S CONDITION CRITICAL. [rv TKI.EGR.U'tI. OWN COl! RESPONDENT.] PAEROA, Monday. A brutal assault look place in Paeroa this evening when Mr. Joseph Brenan, a well-known resident, was attacked while on his way home through the Paeroa Domain. Mr. Brcnau passed a man on a narrow track, and immediately afterwards was knocked down by a blow on the head. He was unable to regain his feet, and was brutally kicked and clubbed with some weapon. Some children witnessed the assault and ran for help. When assistance was near at hand the man made a speedy retreat. Mr. Brenan was taken home, and received medical attention. His injuries wero very extensive, and 13 stitches were required to close the wounds in the head. Several fingers were broken, and there is a possibility that three ribs are fractured. Mr. Brenan is ity a critical condition. and cs suffering from severe shock. The police later made an arrest.
