(Received November 2.", 5.5 p.in.)

• BRISBANE, Nov. 23,

Tho English cricketers commenced a match against Queensland yesterday at Brisbane. There wero 12,000 spectators. Tho weather alternated between cloudy and sunny and the temperature was about 75 degrees, with a light breeze. Iho svickot was somewhat slow find patchy, and inclined to give a falso idea of pace. When stumps were drawn tho local side were all out for 116 runs, and had dismissed six of tho visitors for 112.

Oxcnham, who had announced that ho would not play for Queensland, agreed to do so and tho local team comprised O'Connor (captain), Thompson, Oxcnham, Ktiowlos, Howe, Cough, Hornibrook, lfiggins, Litstcr, Nothling and Thurlow. Benstead was 12th man.

O'Connor won the toss and he and Gougb opened Queensland's first innings. Cough bit one from Hammond for four, provoking tumultuous cheering. Geary s bowling was not impressive, being shortpitched and laboured. L'reeman, who has a curious (lattoning out action when he is delivering a ball, was tricky all through.

Tho fielding was smart and Chapman gave some clover displays, lho Queenslanders' batting was patchy and uncertain, except for brief intervals. Chapman kept changing his bowlers at both ends and only £8 runs were scored in the first hour.

Three wickets fell in 13 minutes, beginning with that of O'Connor, who, with Thompson, made tho best stand. Hammond did not look a dangerous bowler for tho first test match, but White created a great impression. Just prior to 4 p.m. the Qucenslandcrs' innings finished. Hobbs and Sutcliffe opened for -England after tea. They knocked up half a century in 37 minutes. Hobbs was caught brilliantly by Ko'.\e at second slip. A few minutes later, amid frenzied cheers, Sutcliffo was caught by 1 hompson at cover. His 34 had been made in 44 minutes.

The spectators roared when Hammond was caught by Litstcr before ho had scored.

The game became thrilling beyond description when, like lightning, O Connor, behind tho wickets, picked up a ball which had been tapped by Tyldcslcy and skittled the stumps before Mead could reach tho crease from the other end. O'Connor also caught Chapman smartly. The English captain had made 35 runs in 47 minutes. Details of the scores arc
