THE TRAMWAYS CLUB. DEFEAT OF VACUUM OIL CO. An enjoyable tenuis ma'.ch took place on Saturday afternoon between tho Vacuum Oil Company and the Tramways Club teams on the Tramways' courts at Gaunt Street. The Oil Company's team was captained by Mr. Blair, JNew Zealand director oil the linn, and considered in bis younger days to be one of the best amateur players, lie huving played in championship finals from time to time. Tho Tramways' team was captained by Mr. G. Gordon. Victory rested with the Tramways team, which won 12 sets to the Vacuum Oil Company's 7 set 3. A good standard of. play was seen in several of tho matches, notably tho men's doubles and singles, victory resting on each occasion with tho Oil Company's representatives, Messrs. Blair and Cadness. During tho afternoon lea adjournment tho I secretary of tho club, Mr, S. M. Farrelly, welcomed tho visitors, and mentioned that it was largely due to the interest taken in the club by the president, Mr. A. E. Ford, general manager, that tho courts were available to the Tramways employees. Ho also referred to tho co-operation of tho Tramways officials in all departments toward sports. There was a large gathering- of members and friends at the Grange Road Baptist Club on tho grounds adjoining the church on Saturday afternoon, when th.a Rev. A. S. Wilson, pastor of the church, declared tho season open. Mrs. A. S. Wilson played the first ball, after which a number of games wero played. PRESENTATION AT REMUERA. In recognition of tbeir services Mr. T. E. Hickson, president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, nnd Mrs. Hickson were presented with a silver fruit dish oil Saturday afternoon by members of tho Remuera Lawn Tennis Club. Mr. E. W. Griffiths, president, said tho cluk, desired to mark its appreciation (if the services given by Mr. and Mrs. Hickson. _ Mr. Hickson had held practically every office in the club nnd he had the highest honours that could bo conferred upon him by tennis players. Mr. Hickson said his wife was a foundation member of the club, and that was the chief reason why he had joined. The presentation was a pleasant surprise. HAMILTON DEFEATS CAMBRIDGE.
