The president of the provincial executive of the Southern Hawke's Bay branch of the Farmers' Union declined to allow a letter of congratulation to be senL to Mr. W. J. Poison, Dominion president of the union, on his election to Parliament. When tho suggestion was made by Major McDonnell, Mr. J. Livingston, tho president, who is also a member of tho Dominion executive, declined to accept a motion. "We as a union are opposed to politics," lie said. "We have to keep out of them, and I cannot accept tho motion." He admitted thero was nothing to prevent members offering their congratulations individually, but said that immediately they did so as an organised body of tho Farmers' Union they were associating themselves with a particular party, and getting mixed up in party politics. Major McDonnell: He does not belong to any party. A Member: Mr. Poison belongs to the Independent Party. Another Member: None of us know at present which sido he is on. Tho chairman persisted in his attitude, and the proposal was dropped.
