GIRLS AS JOCKEYS.
WINS AT NEWMARKET. FIRST TWO PLACES IN RACE. Smiling girl jockeys showed that they had winning ways on horseback as well as off at Newmarket recently. In tho only race in existence in which they arc allowed to enter they secured the first two places. Tho only man who dared opposo them—Mr..' F. A. Simpson, the veteran, who has won the race 13 times—camo homo a very bad third.
The Newmarket Town Plate, in which tho girls were competing, was instituted by Charles 11. in 1666, and tho recent occasion witnessed one of tho most exciting finishes in its long history. Miss Iris. Rickaby, daughter of Fred Rickaby, a jockey, and said to bo able to rido many horses of which men wer« afraid, rode Bogus. Sho raced neck and neck for tho winning post with Mrs. A. lleald, of Upper Dicker, on Due do Guise. Amid tremendous excitement Miss Rickaby flashed past tho post a length and aquarter ahead. Mr. Simmon, on, Royal Scot, Miss Eileen Joel, daughter of Mr. Sol Joel, tho South African millionaire, -on Peacemaker, and Miss D. Saunders, on last year's winner, Fair Toy, were rather too far behind to get a good view of the finish.
Miss Rickaby, a tall, fair girl, does not think that women will over rido in the Derby. " I do not beliovo in women jockeys competing with men," she said after tlio race. This was the fourth time sho had competed, and sho won the race the year before last. [A picture of the finish of tho raco appears on page 3,]
