KENNEL CLUB SHOW.

IMPROVEMENT IN QUALITY.

SEVERAL FINE SPECIMENS. SMALL INCREASE IN ENTRIES. General improvement in quality and a fcliglit increase in entries characterised tlio Auckland Ketine] Club's 37th Annual Dog Show, which opened at the Show Grounds yesterday. A total of 250 dogs was entered this year, as compared with 250 last year. The show will again bo open to-day. A decided improvement in all terrier classes was noticeable, the smooth-haired fox terriers showing a particular advance. The winning smooth fox terrier was stated by the judge to he the best he had seen for years. Increased numbers were forthcoming for terrier class?!) taken on the whole. Several first-class specimens were displayed in the Irish terrier classes. Scotch terriers were not, numerous, but there was evidence that the dogs are coming back to favour. A particularly high standard was shown in the Alsatian classes. However, the number of entries was disappointing, but close competition ruled. The judge said he was very much impressed by the ring managing of the dogs, owners having learned how to handle the dogs in the ring.

The toy dogs, taken all round, showed very high quality, according to the judge. The numbers also were satisfactory in all classes, bring an increase on last year's exhibits. The Pomeranian classes were characterised by several high-class animals. The winning puppy in each sex was considered to be very promising, while thera were also puppies of exceptional promise in the Pekinese classes. The judge said one or two of the old entrants wero beginning to show signs of age and owners would bo well advised to retiro them.

The bulldog classes drew llio best entries in the show, competition being keen. A distinct improvement was shown in typo, the judge considering the first and second dogs were capable of winning anywhere in New Zealand.

The collio classes were not well patronised, but a uniformly good type was on show. The winner of the dog classes was described as a good "typey" dog, showing great character and Quality. The winning bitch was a good, rakish, sound collie out of coat.

Improvement on previous years was shown in the quality of sporting clogs, particularly Irish setters, the majority of which were of correct type. The winning dog and bitch in the English setter classes were animals of line standard. Apart from the winning dogs, the cocker spaniels wcro of a low standard. A pleasing feature in sporting dog classes was the'introduction of tlio Labrador retriever.
