FLAXWORKERS' WAGES.
SLIDING SCALE FAVOURED. ATTITUDE OF THE COURT. [BV TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION".] PALMKI?STON NORTH. Friday. A judgment of the Arbitration Court on questions affecting the flax industry has been received by the office of the Department of Labour. Application was made by the employers lor a reduction of 10 per cent, in the wages of workers in the Manawatu district; another for a rate for workers on automatic scutching machines, as wages were not at first fixed on the state of prosperity of tho industry. The employers' application was refused. The Court favours a sliding scale, but, as tile employers oppotQ it, the Court thinks it should be adopted only with the consent of tho parties concerned. The Court has prepared a lengthy subclause. for consideration of tbn parties to proyido a base on which wages can lie regulated, providing for increase and (Increase of wages according ns the base rises or falls. Regarding the automatic scutchers a clause of tho award was amended to provide piece and time rates.
