AN ARMED BURGLAR.
CAPTURE IN MELBOURNE. FIGHT WITH HOUSEHOLDERS. Two men and a woman at Gardiner, Melbourne, on tho night of Saturday, November 10, captured a housebreaker, who was armed with an automatic pistol. The man, with a companion, was found in tho house of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Andrews, and it was subsequently discovered that ho had in his possession articles stolen earlier in (lie evening from the house of Mr. W. M. Woodfull, tho cricketer.
Mr. Andrews surprised tho two men when lie returned home with his wife, and Mr. McCallurn, a neighbour, about 9.30 o'clock. One of the men whipped out a pistol and said, "(Jo away rpiiotly or I will drill n hole in you." Mrs. Andrews was watching the front of the house, and without hesitation .Messrs. Andrews and McCallurn ran from the room and slammed and locked tho door.
The intruders leaped from the window and as they raced across the lawn Messrs. McCallurn and Andrews tried to intercept them. One climbed the fence and escaped, l>ut the other was caught by Mr. McCallurn. He struggled violently, and when Mr. Andrews ran to Mr. McCallum's assistance he threatened to shoot them, and made desperate attempts to draw a pistol from hip pocket. He was safely pinioned, however, and several neighbours ran to the scene and helped to overpower him. Finally one of tho police patrols arried and took charge of h'.m. He is only 19 years of age.
