At -tlio London wool sales to-day 10,561 bales were offered, of which 6094 were Australian and 3151 New Zealand. There, was an excellent selection- of . greasy Merinos suitable to all sections of the trade, a large offering of slipes, but a small supply of other sorts. Keen competition at the opening rates was maintained. Clips named sold as follows"Terrick," 26Jd to 24d; " Bugewong," 21£ dto 19£ d; "Wcilmoringle," 24£ d to 23d; "Bangate,"' 25£ d to 23jd; " Mosgicl," 21J,d to 19d. At Die Sydney wool sales to-day—the closing auctions of the week—there was a market. Prices were unchanged. There was again particularly strong demand for fine quality lines. At the annual meeting of shareholders in the Westport Coal Company, tlie report and balance-sheet, which provided for a final dividend of Is 3d a share, making 2s 3d for the year, were adopted. The retiring directors, Messrs. Edgar Hazlett and James Begg, were re-elected, and Messrs. C. H. Statham and J. S. Hislop were reappointed auditors. All the speakers made special reference to the hopes that were entertained for an improvement in the industry, as a result of the developments that were taking place for the better utilisation of coal, either in .its pulverised form, or by distillation at low temperatures for the extraction ; of the valuable oils and the manufacture of smokeless Kiel. The company last year paid an interim dividend of Is a share, a fin.il dividend of 6d a share, and a bonus of 6d a share paid from the insurance account. The dividend was equal to 7£ per cent. In 1926 the dividend was 10 per cent.

Details are published of a proposed merger of threo motor manufacturing .firms, namely, tho makers of tho Humher, Iliilman and Commer cars and vehicles. The two first-named companies have factories near each other at Coventry. The Commer firm at Luton makes commercial motor-vehicles. Humbers are to bo tho holding company. The capital of the new combine is to .be 'about £1,250,000. The* shareholders in tlio Hil'mari firm, a private ono, and those of the Commer concern, have agreed to flio -merger and the proposal is now before tho Hurtiber shareholders.
