WASHING NEW BLANKETS.
To soften the water allow a tablespoon of borax to a medium-sized tub. The blankets should be soaked overnight in cold water to which a little ammonia has been added. To one ounce of soap cut up small or one packet of lux allow ono ounce of powdered borax end throe quarts of cold water; boil till tho soap is quite dissolved. Mix into a large bucket of hot water, cool to lukewarm, insert blankets ono at a timo and knead with the hands, pulling up and down out of tho water to loosen the dirt. Never uso washing board or soap. _ Rinso three times in warm water--thorough rinsing is most important. Shako tho blankets well to raiso tho nap, and bo careful to hang out evenly. Do tho job on a bright day with hot sunshino for drying. The mixture given is for ono pair of blankets. Another method is as follows: —Put 31b. of unslaked linio and lib. of washing soda in a kerosene-tin and half-fill with water. Allow to stand till next day, then strain through fino muslin. Bottle this. On washing day put ono pint of it in a kerosene-tin of water and bring to tho boil. All minerals contained in tho watpr will como to tho top, and can be skimmed off with a saucer. For tho new blankets pu{, two largo tablespoons of borax and a pint of soft soup into a tub of water, and odd two teaspoons of glycerine to each pint of water. When thoroughly dissolved put in tho blankets and allow to remain for two hours; rub out and rinso in three waters, all lukewarm. ' When dry, beat with a light carpet beater to givo them a fluffy nppcarance. Tho glycerine softens ilio 1 water and prevents tho blankets bccom* I ing hard and felted.,
