THE LINER MAMARI.

SALE TO HAMBURG BUYER.

PURCHASE PRICE OF £23,500. CALLIOPE DOCK ACCIDENT. The. well-known Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Maniari has' been sold to Mr. Arnold Bernstein, Hamburg, for £23,500. She will be converted at Kiel, for the transport of Ford motor vehicles. Of 8114 tons gross, and built at Belfast by Messrs. Harland and Wolff, in 1904, the Mamari made many voyages to New Zealand. During her 24 years' service, she had two remarkable accidents. When in the Calliope Dock in November, 1906, she moved forward oil tho blocks with the result that 50 men were swept off punts and stages into the water, two being killed and 30 injured. Tho vessel had been docked early in the morning and at the time of the accident about 50 men were engaged in scrubbing and cleaning the hull as the water was being pumped out of the dock. The Mamari had been shored up, but she suddenly moved forward, and caused a great surge oi water. Practically all the men were lifted by the wave, and were swirled round in the water, many of them being injured by pieces of timber. 'J lie work of rescuing tho men was carried out will) great difficulty, because it was feared that the Mamari would capsize as much as possible in tho small space and crush those in the water and their rescuers. The bodies of the two men who were killed wero not recovered until the Mamari had been undocked and the dock had been pumpod dry. The second accident to the Mamari occurred in August, 1927, when sho was cn route from New Zealand to London, via Montevideo and Teneriffe. When about 250 miles north east of Falkland Islands sho collided with an iceberg and was badly damaged in the bow, which was stove in and the fore peak flooded. At slow speed the crippled steamer proceeded 750 miles to Bahia Blanca, Argentine, where temporary repairs were effected before she was able to resume her voyage. Permanent repairs were carried out in England. She afterwards made a voyage to' Now Zealand and was at Auckland last April.
