PRIDE MAKES GOOD START. [my TEM-:r:u\pii.~own f'iil:lil'.sl'iiNlii;s I. | ("HUISTCnrriCH. Wednesday The racing at I'iceniton |<>.rl.-iv was lull ol int ore-it. most, of the events providing keen contests. Crown Area won the Jockey flub Handicap with a strong run in the straight Mr, G-. D. Ilreenwood signalised his return from a I rip abroad by winning the Oaks with Pride, who had not. raced prior to this meeting. (Cueing commenced with the Suburban Handicap, a high-weight race for riders of junipers. Sir George Clifford's bracket. Quarterdeck and Broadmoor, carried a little more tliiin Black Mint and Shining Armour, who were separated by one ticket. Broadmoor led Beaumont to the home turn, a-here Quarterdeck, Black Mini ami Shining Armour moved up. (.Jua i terdeck joined Broadmoor in the lend on reaching the »trni«ht, and they had the finish to theri•elveg. Quarterdeck winning by half a. length Black Mint wns three lengths away, with Bhining Armour close up. The winner wt.s twice second to hue? Docket at. the Du-.i-•din miieting hist mouth. This was Sir Wooriio Clifford's first win for the season.

For tho Spring Nursery Handicap Gold Tinge was a good favourite, in a field of 11, while after a gnp Aspiring. Speed Light and False Scent were fuirly evenly backed. Speed Light was first to show out. Racing for tho course proper thero was some trouble. Aspirins nearly falling, whilo Belcairo also suffered. Gold Tinge was second a furlong from the post, but Speed Light beat him easily by over a length. Duellona was a length away third, beating Passbook by a head. Francolin. Falso Scent and Stalely wero finishing on well at the head of the others. Speed Light ran the journey out well, showing great improvement on her form in tho Welcome Stakes, in which she faded out over a furlong from homo.

An inquiry into the interference showed that the trouble was caused by Passbook bumping Aspiring 011 to Helen ire. It- was due to Passbook running wide at the opening on to tho course proper, where there is no rail, and no blame was attachable to the ruler, T. Webster. For tho Otmo Plate Historic was a littlo better backed than Sir Hoy, with Heau (teste and Lucy Locket next in demand. These four led the field home, though not finite in the expected order. Kilperon made the running from the start, but Vaward moved up fast from tho six-furlong post and was jn second place a furlong further on Lucy Locket was showing out from half a dozen others at tho distance. Historic then challenged. Ho headed the loader

11 bunt 50 yards from the post, but Lucy Locket stayed on and beat him by a nose. Sir Hoy was half a length away, a neck in front of Heau Geste. Lucy Locket lias been racing consistently this season, and will do a lot more winning. Historic found the journey a trifle too long. The Canterbury Cup lost a lot of interest when Papier was withdrawn. He was galloped on in the New Zealand Cup and showed evidence of trouble in one of his hind tendons. There was not much wrong this morning on appearances, but it was considered unwiso to take any risk with him. As was to be expected Laughing Prince was backed confidently to beat his two rivals, of whom Count favour is out of form, while Block Mint, was racing out of his class. Count Cavour led from the start. but when tho straight was reached Laughing Prince drew away to win without an effort by three lengths, whilo Count Cavour was ridden out to beat Black Mint by a length. The winner's performance was attractive as the pace was very fast for tho last mile. ( oiint Cavour is very much on the down grade. The eight acceptors for the Jockey Club Handicap made a useful field. L.right Glow jnst headed Celerity 11. for favouritism, with Crown Area and Batllo Colours next in demand. Goblin Market led Bright Glow and Benzora along the back but Set Sail moved up after going two furlongs and followed Goblin Market round the turn. Celerity 11. was closing up from the back, leaving Crown Area in the rear. Once in tho straight Crown Area put in a great run on the rails. Ho gradually overhauled the leaders and appeared to have the rare won a few strides from tho post, though ho only beat Goblin Market by a head. Set Sail was a length away, with Benzora close up. Bright Glow rim well until a furlong from homo and then stopped. Battle Colours made a run ill tho straight but failed to sustain it.

Celerity It., after being last early, was coins; well nt the entrance to the straight, but could not go on. Goblin Market ran the mile out very solidly. The winner was making his first appearance in the colours of J. McConibc. who purchased him at a good price on Monday. Ho now looks a frond investment for the Riccarton ownertrainer.

The scratching of Bonrose left seven runners for the Oaks. Surma was a tritle better backed than Sir George Clitlord s bracket, Prickles and Childsplay. Childsplay set out to make a pace for her mate. but she was steadied after going three furlongs. Prickles joining her at the mile post, where ('ride and Sarnia were next. Prickles had Sarnia's measure a furlong from the post, where Childsplay was still coin- well. A little further on Pride came with a rush and beat. Prickles by half a length. Sarnia was a length away with Childsplay fomth and Tjiicky Light next. For the Ashley Handicap Freeze Out was a pronounced favourite, but Haze. Amor and t'hastar were all well backed. Swoopalong led along the back, but at the home turn Amor moved up fast _on the outside and was almost on terms with Swoopalong at the distance. These two came 011 together. Amor staving on to win by a neck. Freeze Out, after being well placed at the straight entrance. never looked like overhauling the pair in front and finished a moderate third, with Phastar and Viscount next. Amor has been racing very consistently of late. Swoopalone looks like making a useful winner later on. The Avon Handicap, the eonelmlingevent of the 'lav. «aw King Midas and Gay Sonnet dispute favouritism and they provided the dividends. Gay Sonnet soon opened up a lead of two lengths from <!nld P.rick and Money Aline, while King Midas was fourth at. the end of a furlong. They ran without much change to the straight, where King Midas went after Guv Sonnet, who won ns she liked by three lengths. Money Mine was a length awny. followed by Unseal, who finished on well. Spean Bridge and Desert I,ad were the last pair home. Gold Brick collapsed at the end of five furlongs. Gay Sonnet is a very smart galloper up to a mile
