NEWMARKET AFFAIRS.
HEAVY TRAFFIC LICENCES
The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presiding. Advice was received from the Public Works Department that there was a movement on foot to induce the Government to discontinue the regulation empowering local bodies to charge heavy traflic licence fees, and asking for information regarding the amount of fees received and the damage caused to roads by heavy vehicles. The clerk and borough traflic inspector were instructed to draw up tv report. The clerk was instructed to take steps to hold an election by ratepayers of an assessor under the Valuation Amendment Act.
Heavy traffic fees totalling £137 for tho quarter ended September 30 were received from the City Council The Society for the Protection of Women and Children was granted permission to hold a street collection on November 30. An application from tnc Southern Cross League to hold a collection in aid of unemployed and disabled ex-soldiers in Newmarket was also granted. It was decided to suggest to the society that the appeal should bo broadened to cover tho whole city.
