HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES. DISCONTINUANCE OPPOSED. The Birkonlic;ifl Borough Council met Inst evening, tin- deputy-Mayor, Mr. A 11 ;n Hi fit I, presiding. Willi regard to flic agitation by ownerrof heavy vehicles for the discontinuance of (hi! collection of heavy traffic licence fees by local authorities, it was decided to inform the Public Works Department of the amount received annually since the heavy traffic regulations were enforced. This revenue had been applied to road maintenance work, and were it. not for the heavy traffic the construction of the roads by bitumen penetration would not have been necessary. r lhe procedure to be observed in apply ing for sanction to raise the proposed loan for sewerage works was outlined in a communication from the Local Government Loans Hoard.
The North Shore Water Board applied fo" payment of £96, the Birkenhead proportion of the current year's levy. Pay ment was authorised.
The Gazette notice vesting tlie control of Kauri Point iJomain in the council was received.
Notification of increased maintenance subsidy of £2 for £l, instead of £| JOs for £l, was received from the Main High ways Hoard.
Approval was given to the granting to Mr. L. L. Purdy and Messrs. Lynch awl Ilalliday, by No. 2 Licensing Authority, of permission to run one bus only during hours when few passengers were offering. Mr, Had field intimated the unemployment position at Birkenhead showed a great improvement compared with last, June. At present the position could bo said to lie "not at all bad."
Three permits for new buildings wcro granted.
