NAVAL COMPROMISE.
OPINION Af WASHINGTON.
MATTER STILL MUCH ALIVE.
REARRANGEMENT SUGGESTED. Australian and N.2. Press Association. WASHINGTON, Oct. 25. It is learned that some naval and diplomatic officials believe that the AngloFrench naval compromise is as much alive as ever, notwithstanding the unmistakably vigorous language with which it was denounced in the Note from the Secretary of State, Mr. F. B. Kellogg, on September 28
Despatches from Pans said the subject would probably be heard of again, because /France was insisting that Britain should carry out her pari of the bargain, which consisted of a promise to support the French land disarmament policy. This opinion is* echoed in authoritative quarters in Washington, where it is believed that as long as France rnaintaius this position Britain undoubtedly will demand that France continue to support the British naval thesis.
Naval men have suggested that London and Paris might attempt to rearrange the naval agreement, in the hope of making it more attractive to the L'nited Stalo.;, but without sacrificing its fundamental principles.
