MISS BEAVAN'S NOVEL ROLE. On the occasion of an • inspection of the re-equipped public wash-houses in Lodge Lane, Liverpool, recently, thci Mayor, Miss Margaret Beavan, assumed a novel role. Going to the assistance of a woman of 74, who has been doing her washing ther* for 40 years, she rolled up her sleeves and, bending over tho copper, wrung out a sheet. " I know what your washing days wer9 in the old times before this splendid new apparatus was installed," she said, " It will save molhprs miich unnecessary labour. lam an old spinster, but I know what a mother's duties arc, and how necessary it is for her to have ber husband's meals ready to time.
