ALLEGED FORGERY.

BANK ACCOUNTANT CHARGED DEALINGS WITH CHEQUES. ACCUSED PLEADS NOT GUILTY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —I'RESS ASSOCIATION'] NAPIEU. Friday. Hercules-Robert Hunter, accountant at tho Napier branch of the Bank of New Zealand, appeared before Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., in tho Napier Police Court this morning to faco five charges relating to cheques. He was charged that on July 13 at Napier ho inado a false document, a lodgment slip on tho Bank of New Zealand, Napier, of a cheque for £277 2s 6d, drawn on tlio Bank of New Zealand, Sydney, tlio drawers of tho cheque purporting to be Hunter and Sons, of Sydney, then knowing tho document to be falso and having the intention that it should be acted upon as genuine, thereby committing forgery. Tho second charge, dated July 17, was similar to the first, but related to a cheque for £372 17s 6d.

Accused was further charged that on July 13 at Napier, in incurring liability to the Bank of New Zealand, he obtained credit to the amount of £277 2s 6d by means of fraud—by t lie lodgijient of a cheque for £277 2s 6d drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Sydney, on tho same lodgment slip, tho drawers of tlio cheque being falsely purported to be Ifunter and Sons, whereas the cheque was in fact drawn by accused as administrator of tho estate of Mabei I£. Hunter, deceased, and, further, accused, having lodged tho said cheque with the bank at Napier to be credited to his account, did by deceit abstract the choquo from the custody of the bank. Tho fourth charge was similar to the third, having relation to tho cheque for £372 17.s 6d, the. rlato being July 17. The final charge was that on July 17 and on various dates between July 17 and August 8 accused did, with intent to defraud, obtain sums of money amounting in all to £372 17s 6d from the Bank of New Zealand bv false pretences, to wit, by valueless cheques.

Detective Butler conducted the prosecution and Mr. N. L. Gleeson appeareed for accused.

After lengthy evidence had been heard accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to tho Supreme Court for trial.
