PRICKLY PEAR.
SUCCESSFUL ERADICATION.
USE OF SEVERAL PARASITES
Replying to Mr. Shand in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly last, week, the Minister of Agriculture. Mr. Thorby, said that successful results had attended the introduction of caterpillars, the red spider, and other parasites into prickly pear-infested areas of New South Wales.
The Government, declared the Minister, had made available CISOO this year, in conjunction with the Federal Government, to enable a very great extension of the work .n heady being carried out in the distribution of.eggs of the caterpillar. The results to hand were extremely satisfactory, showing clearly that the parasites had absolutely eradicated the prickly pear from large tracts of country, and that, thov would not only, to a great extent, control 01- prevent any extension of the prickly pear country, but would nlso greatly reduce the pear in the infested country.
