MAIN ROAD MAINTENANCE. DRAINAGE SCHEME CONDITIONS. Tho .Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, tho Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates .presiding. The chairman of No. 1 District Highways Council notified that authority had been given for a, maintenance subsidy oi £llos for £l, amounting to £lO3 inrespect of the cost, £172, of resurfacing eight chains of Onewa Iload with bitumen and metal chips. The Main Highways Board would in future subsidise sealing of main highways up to a width of 66ft. in tho business area, and on tho remaining portions tho subsidy would bo limited to a width of 30ft. Mr. F. 15. Powell, engineer for the drainage scheme, forwarded conditions imposed by tho Auckland Harbour Board in respect to tho site for tho effluent pipe and septic tanks, a rental of £lO a year being charged for tho soptio tank site. It was resolved to endeavour to induce the board to forego the rental, as the tanks would bo below high-tide mark, and tho land would be useless otherwise to the board. The other requirements wore referred to Mr. Powell to adjust after conference with tho medical officer of health. Tho waterworks engineer reported the consumption of water for the month was 2,350,000 gallons. A start had been rnado to lay tho now six-inch water mains from the reservoir to Verran's corner. It was decided also to lav by day labour tho four-inch mains when these woro delivered. The tender of Mr. W. Casey at £23 was accepted for the earthwork for extension of (lie formation of Kowhai Avenue. , A resolution of sympathy with tho relatives of tho late 'Mr. F. A. Gilpin, a former member of the council, was passed. Three permits for new buildings wera granted.
