VALUELESS CHEQUES USED.

" GET RICH QUICK SCHEME." TWO MEN ADMIT OFFENCES. LBY TELEGRAPH. —OWN" COMIESTONDENT.] DUNEDIN, Wednesday. Picas of guilty to obtaining money by false pretences were entered by Herbert Rollinsoii and Harry Vincent in the Magistrate's Court to-day before .Mr. J. R. Bartholomew, S.M. Chief-Detective Cameron said there wero--19 charges in all. Rollinsoii had been engaged bv an Auckland firm to sell shares. Ho was engaged upon a basis of salary and commission which, from information received, should have been quite remunerative. Later he met Vincent in Dunedin. Tho latter also was engaged upon salary and commission. The two decided to work together and, during August and early September, four cheques totalling £l9 were passed to hotelkeepers in Dunedin. Then Vincent conceived tho idea of going to Oamaru, where he expected to do business in tho way of promoting companies in connection with petrol supplies. However, they did not meet with the success that was anticipated. Rollinson issued a clique for £lO, payable to Vincent, by means of which they raised enough money to pay a boarding house keeper. They came to Dunedin, passed another cheque for £lO and continued on their mission. At Gore, where they passed three cheques, a boarding houso keeper told them their cheque had been dishonoured. They left for Clinton. At Mosgiel, Normanby, Christchurch and Wellington they passed cheques, the one at Wellington enabling them to get to Auckland. They issued three other cheques before returning to Christchurch. There they parted. Altogether about £l5O was involved, Practically all the cheques had been cashed by hotelkeepers. Neither had been in trouble before, said the chief detective. Rollinson belonged to a highly respectable family in the Timaru district. Vincent had been in business in Christchumrch, but was obliged to file during the slump period. Tho fall seemed to have conic as a result of the meeting of the two men and their desire to make money. "It. is deplorable that they should have lost-their heads to such an extent. This is one of those mad get-rich-quick schemes," said Mr. While for Rollinson. "Tho accused are more foolish than criminal." A brother of Rollinson's said if probation were granted he and his father would take care of accused and his wife anti family. Mr. Lloyd, on behalf of Vincent, said both men had been foolish. Vincent came of a good family, was married and had three children. He was quite prepared to pay his share of restitution. Tho magistrate said ho had a report from the probation officer in regard to Rollinson and ho would like the same in regard to Vincent. Ho would deal with both men then. Accused were, remanded in custody until Saturday. FIVE CHEQUES ISSUED. ACCUSED CIVEN PROBATION. Probation for 18 months was tho sentence imposed on Leonard Montmorency Reynolds, aged 42, a married salesman, of Christchurch, who appeared in the Police Court yesterday on a charge of issuing a valueless cheque for 122 at Ilelensville in January. On four similar counts, involving £lO. which lie obtained in Auckland, accused was convicted and discharged. A condition of the probation was that Reynolds must make restitution of tho £l2 at the discretion of the probation officer.
