LOVELY ATLANTIC ISLE.
A LINK WITH THE WORLD. PROPOSED SCHOONER SERVICE. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.!] CAPETOWN. Sept. 21. Tristan da Cunlia, llio lonely island in the Southern Atlantic, which is often cut off from the outside world for years at a time, will probably have a regular schooner service with Capetown in the near future. Mr. P. Snell, of Capetown, who has been interested in the welfare of the islanders for some time, has drawn up a scheme which may solve the urgent needs of these isolated peoplo of Tristan. It i£ hoped that the Lars Rysdahl, a lurgb schooner, will leave Table Bay in January carrying stores and mails to the island. If sufficient funds aro forthcoming the Lars Rysdahl, or some other suitablo vessel, will be purchased, and a number of young islanders engaged as seamen. Between voyages to the island the ship will probably, be engaged in the snoeking trade. The young men will have opportunities of broadening their outlook, and it is expected that many of them will settle in South Africa. Mr. Snell says ho hopes to receive official support in this now enterprise for the relief of the island. In the past it has been suggested that a meteorological siation might bo established on Tristan da Cunlia, and the schooner could carry the staff to the spot. There is also a possibility of exploiting the whaling and iisliing resources of the island. Captain Cart-wright, a shipmaster, whoso wife was bom on Tristan da Cunlia, is willing to command any vessel purchased for regular communication with the island. The .vessel would provide a means of sending the children to South' Africa for education, thus solving one of the most urgent problems of the islanders. In February next year tho island will be visited by tho Canadian Pacific Railwav tourist liner, Duchess of Atholl.
