SPORT AMONG TROUT.

TAUPO AND ROTORUA SEASON OPENING NEXT THURSDAY. GOOD BASKETS AT ARAPUNI. Although the period for trout fishing in the district under the control of tho Auckland Acclimatisation Society is now over three weeks old the season proper will not open until the commencement of fishing at Lake Taupo and Rotorua next Thursday, November 1. Among trout anglers, New Zealanders and visitors from all parts of the world, groat interest will tie taken in the opening of the season at Taupo thU year, and the prospects are exceedingly good. Toward the end of last season the fish had improved greatly in condition, iriid even the small trout were plump and had none ot that seragginess which had been a bnd feature m recent years. Tagging operations and inspections carried out by ollieials of the Fisheries Department - recently indicate that the improvement in condition is continuing. Since the close of last season, efforts have been rnado to augment the food supplies at both Taupo and Rotorua by the liberation of small fresh-water fish and shrimps, and with normal weather conditions this should help greatly to improve the fishing. The Auckland acclimatisation district is not particularly rich in good trout streams but those keen fishermen who have already fished at Arapuni Lake this season are optimistic that here at least is a potential fishing area of great value. Notwithstanding tho fact that the majority of the fishing is done from rowing boats anchored in the lake some excellent sport has been enjoyed. During last week-end two Auckland sportsmen caught 37 trout on the fly from a boat anchored near the spillway. The fish ranged in weight from 4b. to about 1 gib., the majority weighing slightly over 21b. The (rout were in beautiful condition and fought well. Tho two anglers concerned are loud in their praises of Arapuni trout as tnDie fish. Members of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society arc particularly pleased with tho auspicious opening of the season at Arapuni. There is said to be an abundance of feed in the. lake, including a great jiumbcr of small carp, on which trout will feed. It is thought there are many trout weighing from 31b. to 41b., and improving in condition all the time.
