LABOUR AND LEAGUE.
ORIGIN OF GREAT WAR. PLEA FOR WORLD PEACE POLICY. Australian i.'i'ess Association —United Service LONDON, Oct. IG. In the course of Mr. Ramsay MacDonald's spoech in the Reichstag, Berlin, yesterday, he said the causes of the Great War were infinitely complex. The policy of seeking allies was antiquated and must be replaced by the policy of seeking friends.
The Kellogg pact and the Treaty of Locarno would bo useless unless there were a spirit of peace in world policy. r ihe defect of the meetings at Geneva was that each nation had visions of a fresh war. The first task for statesmen was to make the people prefer the risks of peace to the' risks of war. A groat deal of useless discussion had taken place between Britain, Japan and America, each of which nations had been thinking only of her own armaments.
It would bo better if the United Stales joined the League of Nations. If not, the sooner Europe helped herself the better. Under no circumstances would ho ever ngree to enforce the stipulations in the Peace Treaty by ari appeal to arms.
