OPERATION ON SIERRA. [from our own correspondent.] SUVA, Oct. .11. Mr. Arthuj Garrels, the American Con-sul-General for Australia, and his wife, were passengers by the Sierra for Honolulu this week. JNlrs. Garrels became ill on board, and an operation was performed by Dr. S. B. Wakefield, the ship's surgeon. It was very successful. Mrs. Garrels, however, wa.s too ill to get up in Suva, and her husband remained with her, arrangements made for his entertainment lapsing. To morrow Dr. Lambert, South Pacific Islands representative of tho Rockefeller Foundation, stationed in Suva, will leave for Sydney, where he will confer with Dr. Hetherington, chief medical officer for the Solomon Islands, concerning the work to bo undertaken there next year under the auspices of the foundation, which Dr. Hetherington represents in an honorary capacity. The Western Pacific Royal Gazette states than on February 29 this year the British Solomon Islands Protectorate showed an excess of assets over liabilities of £69,798. At December 31 last year the Gilbert and ElV.ce Islands Colony had a credit balance of £67,288. Mis. D. Costello. and a child with her, narrowly escaped serious injury when the car crashed into a tree at a corner round which she was driving.
