MAINTENANCE OF ROADS. SITE FOR COURTHOUSE. fBY TELEGRAPH.—OWV CORRESrONTDEN'T. ] PAPAROA. Thursday. At a meeting o;f the Otamatea Connty Council yesterday a letter was received from the Raupo Drainage Board offering £25 to cover the cost of the motorcar and travelling expenses of the engineering staff for tho year from August 1, 1928.

In regard to the Hukatere district roads, tho Public Works Department wrote stating that the county's allocation had been fully approved and nothing further could be granted for Hall, Drummond and Silich Roads. Also that the department considered the Government should not he asked for more than a pound for pound subsidy. The Marine Department advised that a place had been a.pproved for the RaupoTikinui ferry slip. Tho Main Highways Board wrote advising that a subsidy of £5 for £1 would be granted for tho completion of the urimetalled gap of l ; ' r miles on the Manga-wai-Ivaiwaka main highway. It was decided to ask this board to define the road between Kaiwaka aud Maungafcuroto. Tho board also advised that it was unable to declare the Batley Road, Maroheno to Linton's, ft main highway, but that it would reconsider the matter next year.

A letter from the Railways Department stated with regard to water troughs that facilities had already been provided at Maungaturoto and were being arranged for at- tho I'aparoa station. The Justice Department asked that the council grant sections 9 and 10, Mauugaturoto, for a Courthouse site. The request was granted, The North Auckland Progress League advised that it had decided to go into recess owing to tlie lack of support front local bodies. Contracts for work in connection with roads were let as follows: —Batley to Linton Roads, quarrying, W. A. Judd, £202 8s; Matakolie Church Road, quarrying, W. A. Judd, £,78 5s lid; Simpson's Road, Ruawai, quarrying, loading and carting, W. A. Pratt',, £B2 15s sd; McCarroll's Gap to Waikiekie, loading and carting, W. A. Pratt, £BO 13s lOd; Paparoa-Waikiekits Central Road, loading and carting, W. A. Pratt, £192 7s Id; Jackson's Road, Mareretu, loading and carting, W. A. Pratt, £B6 ss.

STRONGER ROAD WANTED.

-At a meeting of the Otamatea County Council the clerk reported that, in conjunction with Messrs. Humes unci Holmes, ho had interviewed the Main Highways Board at "Wellington in connection with the Ruawai to Faparoa section of tho Dargavillo to Maungnturoto main highway. It had been arranged that the county engineer should prepare an estimate of tho cost of reconstructing the highway and submit it to tho board. The clerk said the Ruawai Dairy Company desired to consign its butter by rail from Paparoa, instead of by steamer and rail from Ruawai, via Hclensville. To enable it to do so economically it was essential that the road should be considerably strengthened in order to allow a laden weight of four tons to he carried, instead of two and a-half tons as at present. He added that a petition containing over 600 (signatures was presented to tho Prime Minister asking; for assistance from the Main Highways Board toward reconstructing this road. It was • announced that a conference would be held at Ruawai on Monday, between Hohson and Otamatea County delegates, for the purpose of arriving at » uniform policy in connection with thi? highway.
