VERY SATISFACTORY REPORT.

DECREASE IN COST OF BEDS

The Waikato Hospital Board met today, Mr. Campbell Johnstone presiding. A highly satisfactory report upon the conduct of tho institution, made by Mr. F J Fenton, tho Health Department's inspecting house manager, was forwarded by Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, DirectorGeneral of Health.

The report stated that there had been a decrease in the total cost per occupied bed over last year. In 1926-27 the total cost was £IBO *4s, while last year the cost was £169 9s.

In connection with a recommendation from tho Council of New Zealand Hospital Matrons, that the nursing staff of all hospitals be allowed a minimum of two days off per month, the superintendent. Dr. G. W. Gower, said nurses employed by the Waikato Board were given an extra week of! at tho end of six months service, arid this was more appreciated than two days off a month. A remit for the next hospital boards conference suggesting that hospital fees bo increased to 12s a day for adults and 6s for children, was opposed: Members said they considered tho fees now charged, 9s and 4s 6d. were adequate The treasurer, Mr. E. G. Johnson, reported that receipts totalling £12,774 were obtained by the board during Sep teinber. The only donation received was <ine of £5. which was given by a Chinese. Mr. Joe Lee.

SURGEON SUPERINTENDENT. NEW ASSISTANT APPOINTED [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.! HAMILTON, Thursday. Dr. R. S. A. Graham, of Te Kuiti. has been appointed assistant surgeon superintendent of the Waikato Hospital. Thero wore 14 applicants for the position. Dr. Graham was born at Hamilton 32 years ago. Ho is the son of the late Mr W. A. Graham, who was responsible for the establishment of the Waikato Hospital. He was educated at the Hamilton High School, the Waitaki Bovs' School and the Otago University. He passed with distinction his final examinations and won tho Batchelor Memorial Medal for midwifery and diseasos of women. Dr. Graham was on tho staff of the Waikato Hospital for two years. Jn 1922 he spent 12 months in post graduate surgical and modioal work in London and Edinburgh. For the past five years he has been in general practice nt Te Kuiti.
