All shops and places of business were closed for tho day and a largely-attonded picnic was held at the homo of Mr. J. Knight, at Fcrndale. An Association football match was also played at Bland ford Park between a Chineso team and a team representing Kents, Limited, in the afternoon, a draw resulting. Nearly 600 Chineso attended tho picnic, all shades of political opinion being represented. Tho holiday-makers assembled at tho Civic Square, where an interested crowd watched them lcavo in 16 charabancs and a number of private motor-cars. When the party reached Ferndalo the weather was sufficiently fine to allotf a programme of sports events to be com: nienced, but after four races had beon decided the sports had to bo abandoned for tho day. It had also been intended to hold a series of humorous competitions, but as the party was kept indoors most, of fho time, theso were not proceeded with. It is hoped by tho committee to hold a second picnic, either on Now Year's Day or on tho first Sunday of next year, when the remainder of tho trophies will bo competed for.
