NEWMARKET TRAFFIC.
ALTERING THE TRAM STOPS. PROTEST BY BUSINESS MEN. Strong opposition to the proposed alteration in the position of tram stops in Newmarket was expressed at a largelyattended meeting of business men yesterday morning. Mr. 11. Smithcrs presided. A poll of ratepayers will ho taken next Thursday, when loan proposals will bo submitted relative to the suggested changes. Mr. H. Gregory, a member of the Borough Council, said he did not consider the alteration of the train stops would bo in the interests of the borough, and especially of business people. No olficial plan had been received by the council from the tramway authorities indicating tho proposed changes, and the council had decided to defer indefinitely the question of the stops. The only point to be considered at tho poll was the alteration of the triangle at the foot of Khybcr Pass. If tho stops were altered and placed in tho triangle the safety zone would bo 80ft. from the footpath, and there would undoubtedly be a serious element of danger to thoso crossing tho street. It was estimated that over 1000 school children passed through Newmarket daily, and with the changing of the tramstops it would be possible for vehicles to travel through the main street at an excessive speed. After lengthy discussion a resolution was passed expressing the opinion that the proposed alteration in the tramway system through the borough was not in the interests of the borough or tho public, nnc] calling upon ratepayers to oppose tho scheme at the poll.
