THE UNITED PARTY'S LEADER.
Sir, —As chairman of a meeting held at Richardson Road, Mount Albert, on ..Jonday night last, I feel it is my duty to contradict the report of the same which appeared in Wednesday's Herald. This meeting was arranged by myself, to enable Mr. Munns to meet certain electors, who stated that they had a grievance in connection with unimproved rating. Upon hearing his explanation of the part he took in this connection, the meeting certainly disagreed with Mr. Munns. It appeared to nie that most of those present had to pay considerably more in local rates than under the old system. After this question had been disposed of, Mr. Munns gave a short political address, which was well received, hardly an interjection was made and at the conclusion the candidate answered many questions in a satisfactory manner. The part to which J take strong exception is that relating to Sir Joseph Ward. When asked if Sir Joseph Ward was not past his prime, Mr. Munns stated that in his opinion Sir Joseph was in the prime of his political career and then instanced the ages of many men, Prime Ministers of various lands, Gladstone, Clemenceau, Salisbury and Venizolos, etc. Mr. Munns was then asked as to whether the selection was unanimous, the candidate stated there had been a ballot and Sir Joseph was finally selected. There were no reporters present at this meeting, which was a semi-private one. The motion of no confidence was moved by Mr. J. R; Robertson, whose name is not on the Roskill roll, the seconder was a man who expressed Labour leanings and sat beside Mr. Robertsoij. IT. H. Evans, Chairman of the meeting.
