PRISON FOR ASSAULT.
OFFENCE BY INDIAN. INCIDENT AT OPOTIKI. fBY TELEORAPH.— OWN" CORRESPONDENT. 1 ()I'OTIKi, Wednesday A charge of assaulting I). Ilickey in the Public: Works office at Opotiki yesterday was preferred against an Indian, Sham Singh, alias Jack Johnson, alias Samuel, who appeared in the Magistrate's Court to-day before justices of the peace. It was stated that accused, who was drurik at the time, tried to force his way into the office, where a largo sum of money was on tho table being made up for the employees' wages. Ilickey, who endeavoured to stop accused, was knocked down. Constable Breed came on tho scene in time to slop serious treble, and arrested accused. Singh had been 20 years in New Zealand and had a very long list of convictions, mostly for assault. Accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment for assault, and on a charge of drunkenness was fined £l.
