CAPTAIN COOK'S LANDING.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS GATHERING AT GISBORNE. [ill' TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] GISBORNE, Monday. Tho 159 th anniversary of the landing of Captain Cook was celebrated yesterday afternoon, when representatives of public bodies and a largo number of the public gathered at tho Cook memorial on Kaiti Beach. A short religious service was followed by speeches eulogising the great navigator, and by tho depositing of wreaths on the monument. Reference was made to tho fact that the ceremony was taking place on the actual sito where Captain Cook first set foot 'on New Zealand soil. Mr. J. R. Kirk, who presided, read a message from tho chairman and council of tho Royal Colonial Institute associating themselves with the honour paid to the memory of Captain Cook, and also messages from tho Prime Minister, the Hon. K. S. Williams, and the Returned Soldiers' Association. A stirring Address was delivered by Dr. Mcllraith.
