THE TRANSPORT BOARD.
CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE. SPECIAL MEETING CALLED. To determine whether it is in' favour of the Auckland Transport Board Act, passed by both Houses of Parliament on Saturday, tho City Council will hold a special meeting on Thursday afternoon. The Act requires that such action shall bo taken within 14 days, and that nothing in the Act shall have any forco unless tho City Council approves tho measure. Should tho Act be approved, the City Council will on the same day pin the date for a poll of ratepayers on the question whether or not the Act should come into operation. Tho poll is required to bo taken within 42 days of the passing of tho Act, that is, on or before November 17. The same question will also bo submitted to a poll of ratepayers in tho remaining portions of tho transport district within the same period. The Act states the board is to take over from the City Council as a going concern the whole of tho latter s tramway and bus undertaking, including land, buildings and plant, as well as loan indebtedness in relation to the undertaking and all sinking funds on such loans. Tho date of taking over is to be arranged between council and board, but must bo within one month of tho board s fust meeting. Hit?; business is to bo taken over as from April 1 last, and the council is to be doomed from that date as acting for the board in all matteis. Machinery clauses define tho exact manner of this transfer and its financial basis. A transport monopoly is conferred on the board within its district., although it is empowered to license private bus services.
