THE WAITAKERES.

Sir, —Our City Council has had much abuse showered upon it for its alleged sins of omission and commission, but as the _ years go on it will be remembered with gratitude for at least one action—the purchase and reservation of all that beautiful hill and bush country from the Cascades to Mountain Road, including that splendid viewpoint, Pukcmatekeo. Here, in. conjunction with other reserves, we have ~ a beautiful expanse which should bo tho people's park, but owing to the condition of the roads is almost inaccessible. Tho - Tongariro National Park has attracted a great deal of attention, but as far as the ( average resident of Auckland is concerned, how much more necessary is the opening up of this fine Waitakere reserve; a land ». of hills and valleys, of bush and ferns, and, as the name implies, a place of. "cascading waters." So close does it lie, to the city that during tho long summor evenings it could e;isily bff visited by motorists desiring to get away from the ? heat and dust of the city after business .. hours. The • peaccfnlness and beauty of the whole scene would induce a wonderful relaxation of overstrung nerves and '' muscles. The council has spent a con- * siderable sum in acquiring this pa;k. 1 trust it will go on with the good work, and spend something on roads giving ( access to the pleasures to be found therein. . Progress.
