DEVONPORT SHIELD MATCHES DEFEAT OF UNIVERSITY. FINALS OF JUNIOR CUPS. As a result of tho eighth round of Dcvonpoi'fc Sliickl matches played at Romucra on Saturday, Somorvillo is now in a stronger position. Mount Eden, playing a man sliort, put in a very strong challengo against tho loaders, but Somcrvillc succeeded in running out winners by 4 goals to 2. Olahuhu gained an unexpected victory against University by the odd goal in seven, and tho Training College defeat of Somerville Colts also something of a surprise. Epiphany won comfortably from University Whippets, Tho final of the junior challengo cup was very keenly contested between Wesley second grado and Waiteinata third grade. Tho teams wcro so evenly matched that thero was no scoro at tho call of time nor after an extra quarter of an hour had been played. MOUNT EDEN V. SOMERVILLE. A freo'hit helped Mount Eden early in tho game against Somervillo and Fletcher had a 3hot from a cross-pass by Penman. Cliiplin saved and C. Walts started the Somorvillo forwards off. but Surman checked their advance. Two short corners went against Somerville. and a hot shot by Jones was stopped by Chiplin. Somervillo was compelled to continuo to adopt defensive tactics and Chaplin found an opportunity and scored from tho edgo of the circle. Fletcher made a lino run down tho lino, but Gardner blocked tho approach to the circle. Somerville rallied to the attack, but Mount Eden quickly shook free, and Fletcher was prominent in bringing his sido within striking distance again. C. and E. Watts dribbled tho ball back to the Mount Eden end. whero H. Watts had a shot which went across the goal mouth. Mount Eden was cornered, but O. Watts' shot was turned aside. A promising opening made by Seccombe ended in the ball going over the line. Lively and spirited exchanges took place in midfield. Somerville reached tho circle and a, shot by »Jlive Watts was stopped. E. Watts got. a chanco a minute later and evened the scoro with a push stroke from closo range. Somervillo stnrted suddenly in the second spell. The ball came across from the left to the circle, where E. Watts was handy and put in a scoring shot,. Mount Eden made a sortie, but Somerville came again and C. Watts ended off a piece of smart work by adding a third goal. .Tones and Chaplin took play down the centre of tho field and Jones had a shot, but Chiplin dealt with it. Chiplin made a first-class save a minute later from a hot shot put in by Chaplin. Tho four Mount Eden forwards nil took pnrt in a concerted advance, and Fletcher seized a chanco fo shoot ill a good one from an angle. Mount, Eden continued to attack, and had considerable success in keeping the ball away from tho Somervillo forwards. Anderson got down to a dangerous rush by the Somerville forwards, and Surman cleared, but they returned again. Anderson saved once more, but the attackers were not to be denied and from scrambling play E. Watts cot one through. For some minutes the Mount Eden defence was severely tested and Anderson got in a great deal of useful hard work. Onco Seccombo broke right through on his own and delivered a powerful shot, but Anderson got squarely in the way. The final scores were: Somerville, i; Mount Eden. 2. WIN FOR EPIPHANY. Epiphany opened the attack against University Whippets and from a corner Hewitt scored. After a brief run to tho Epiphany end. Epiphany returned and again the students were cornered. Frequent scrimmages took place in tho Whippets' circle, but Ephipany could not get through. Eventually Taw followed in and added a second goal for Epiphany. Tho University forwards look a luru at attacking, and Tapp blocked two shots. Spencer put in u beautiful shot from the edge of the circle, but it was disallowed for some infringement. The students continued to dominate the play and when Epiphany invaded Noukea got his sido out of difficulties with a timely drive. Taylor and T. Early in the second spell the Epiphany forwards eamo away in a. combined movement. arid Hewitt shot but struck tho post and Linton cleared to the lino. Two penalty corners were givetl to Epiphany, but a hot shot failed to get through tho defence. A little later a shot by Taw struck the outside of tho post. From another penalty corner Hewitt took the hit and scored with a sudden and well-directed shot. Phillpotts got in a couple of shots, but Neild met them safely. When Otahuhu was attacking F. Gardiner lifted up a curious shot that dropped over tho goalkeeper's head into tho net. Tho students failed to press homo their next, atlnck and a long distance coal to the credit, of Jenkins put Otahuhu in the lead. Training Collego and Somervillo Colls found themselves ver.v evenly matched, and it was uomo while before eilhor side could obtain a definite advantage. Somerville was the first to make a dangerous attack, but a | shot by Heard was blocked_ by Allan in tho Training Collego goal. Training Collogo had a turn at attacking beforo half-timo and Mciklejohn just failed to scoro on more than one occasion.
