CIVIC LEAGUE.

A meeting of the Civic League was held in tho Priscilla Tea Rooms'on Thursday, September 20. Among the matters discussed were the necessity of having tho rest room opened on Sundays, as so many women would find it a great convenience. It was considered that the Railway Department should also be reminded that liquid soap and paper towels should be placed on tho trains, as being more sanitary than the present arrangement. The league discussed Professor Knight's lecture on town planning, in which he advocated small flats. The matter of municipal flats was brought before the City Council by the Civic League last year. The pure food campaign was discussed and the use of preservatives in fish and meat, especially tho use of formalhyde, was strongly condemned as having proved injurious to public health. A report from one of Auckland's lead-, ing physicians stated that in his opinion the use of boric acid for a long period in small quantities often led to grave injury to health. This has been confirmed bv"some of England's leading doctors. The state of tho Parnell and Richmond Road schools was discussed by tho meeting, they being considered old and unsuitable. It was urged that the size of the classes should be reduced to 35, and that no more students should bo taken on at the Training College until positions had been found for those who had finished their training and are waiting for positions.
