BANK OFFICER RETIRING.
THIRTY-TWO YEARS' SERVICE WHOLE PERIOD IN AUCKLAND. After 32 years' service with the Bank of New Zealand, Mr. J. A. Kallender. officer in charge of the letter of credit department in Auckland, will retire at the end of this month. For the whole of the period Mr. Kallender has been with the Auckland branch, and it' is believed his experience in this connection is unique in New Zealand. The son of an officer of the Indian Army, Mr. Kallender was born in England. and at an early age was taken to India with his parents. He came to this Dominion in 1892, and later joined the staff of the bank. In those days Mr. H. Buckleton, the present general manager, was accountant, and although the building was on the same site as the present premises, it was only half the size. Discusing the early days of the bank in Auckland Mr. Kallender said when he joined the staff numbered 31, while to-day it was approximately 170. The increase in staff reflected the increase in the business, and with the growth in the business came the reconstruction c? tha building. Mr. Kallender is very well known in sporting circles. He has represented Auckland at cricket and has played both Rugby and Association football with distinction. - One year he annexed the New Zealand championship for hammer throwing, and before coming to the Dominion was an enthusiastic oarsman in England. Mr.. Kallender is an exceedingly popular officer, and his retirement will be regretter by officers of all banks.
