VICTORY FOR ENGLAND.

The second League test match between Ungland and New Zealand was played in perfect weather here yesterday before 10,000 spectators. The game cannot be expected to commend League to Dunedin. At the end football as a game was absent, the spectators merely waiting for the commencement of the next bout of fighting. One Englishman was ordered oft, but three or four players on each side should lave suffered the same penalty. England, won by 13 points to 5 but the game is regarded as a joke in Dunedin. Last night everyone was asking everyone t>lse, "did you see the fight?" It was a game that could have been memorable for speed and cleverness, but the bad feeling spoilt tho match. The teams were as follows : England. Fullback: Sullivan. Threequar^ers: Ellaby, Brough, Askin, Trodsham. Halves: Evans, Rees. Forwards: Burgess, Bowen, Bentham, Tiowen, Sloman, Fildes, Horton. New Zealand. Fullback: Dufty. Threequarters: L. Scott, Brisbane, Hardgrave. Five-eighths: Prentice, Wetherill. Halfback: Delgrosso. Forwards: J. O'Brien, M. O'Brien, Hutt, Somers, Hall, Coodall. The referee was Mr. S. Devereaux. The Opening Stages. New Zealand kicked off against a strong sun. In the first minute off-side play by J. O'Brien gave the visitors a penalty lack, but fine footwork by Prentice sent the ball over the English line, the visitors forcing just in time. Delgrosso got away, but the ball went out at the corner. Four scrums syds. out were followed by England forcing. From a free-kick to New Zealand Dufty opened the score with a magnificent kick. New Zealand 2. England 0. The English forwards got away well, but Frodsham mulled badly and missed a score. Dufty cleared. A New Zealander was warned and a free-kick to England saw Sullivan's kick go under tho bar. England was in-passing cleverly, but the Jsew Zealand tackling was deadly. M. O'Brien got off-side but Sullivan missed H comparatively easy kick. Then M. O'Brien and Goodall made an exciting run, the latter getting over, but he was called back for a scrum. Sullivan had another penalty kick after a great run by Rees. This time he was successful.

New Zealand . . • . • . 2. „ England . 2. Ellaby, when well away, was tripped, but Sullivan failed with the resulting penalty. England was getting the ball from the scrums and was breaking away regularly, but New Zealand tackled too well. The exhibition until now had not been up to the expectations of the crowd. Wetherill dallied and lost ground and let England through to the line. Ellaby missed his pass and lost a chance. , Delgrosso Carried OS. England was too tricky for New Zealand and Brough was playing a splendid game. At' this stage Prentice and Bo wen were fighting on the ground. The rough play roused the crowd to indignation and there ■were repeated cries of " put him off." Prentice and Bowen were both warned. Delgrosso was then taken off in a stretcher. The spectators were getting very annoyed and were demanding Bowen's dismissal. The Englishmen started the rough play and New Zealand retaliated. Peckham replaced Delgrosso, The New Zealand' forwards got away ■with only Frodsham to pass, but the Englishman cleared brilliantly. Next Peckham made a fine opening and a good passing rnovement saw Scott score. Dufty's kick hit the upright. New Zealand . . . . ..5. England 2. New Zealand kept up the attack and took play to the English line. From a scrum syds. out the visitors gained a few yards and a series of scrums followed. Askin got away, but was grassed in the New Zealand twenty-five. Burgess took a free-kick, which was awarded a minute later, but failed dismally. New Zealand attacked and Prentice made a clever, ■jinky run, but was thrown out at the corner. Play was transferred to the other end' where Rees secured and just got over after a hard run. Sullivan goaled. At half-time the scores were : England 7. New Zealand 5. Brough, Rees, Frodsham and Sullivan •were outstanding among the Englishmen, •while Prentice, M. O'Brien and Dufty were in great form. Delgrosso was.playing well until he was hurt. Peckham Hurdles Opponents. On the resumption of play Dufty missed at goal from a free-kick. England was on the defensive, but Sullivan, at fullback, was very reliable arid gov- his side out of trouble time after time. Bright solo work by Peckham, who hurdled two opponents, brought, the crowd to its toes, but the effort fell through. A serum infringement by England gave Dufty a penalty kick just inside half-way, but he failed.

Strenuous play in rnidfield followed until Dufty sent tlie ball right over the English line. England returned to the attack, but was held up at half-way where New Zealand was awarded a free-kick. Ilortori was in trouble at this stage through a glaring foul. Wetherill was knocked down and Dufty rushed in and separated the pair. Another hostile demonstration by the-crowd followed. The referee singled Horton out. While the official was talking to him Dufty came in and asked for a remission of the penalty for the offence. Only quick intervention by other players saved the situation. The English forwards got away and Pildes got over and appeared to score, hut the referee awarded a force down. Ihe stretcher-bearers were kept very busy. Horton claimed their attention for 10 minutes and J. O'Brien came off a minute later. The Englishmen broke away in a great rush and a long in-pass allowed El la by to score, the referee overruling the touch judge. Sullivan's kick missed. England 10. New Zealand . . . . . . 5. Burgess Ordered 03. Burgess now got into an argument and was held back from lighting by his companions. A few minutes later he was again in trouble and was ordered off, the lino-umpire stopping the game arid reporting him to the referee. Horton. by this time, had recovered and was playing Again. New Zealand attacked hard and got into England's twenty-five, but the visitors came back with clever passing rushes, good play by Hard grave saving the situation. Play continued in the NewZealand twenty-five for some time until Sullivan made a clever opening which gave Bowen a chance to score. Sullivan missed the kick. The game then ended: — England 13. New Zealand 5.
