DRUNK IN CHARGE OF CAR.
MAN ASLEEP AT WHEEL. PENALTY OF £5 IMPOSED. [BY telegraph.—own correspondent.] THAMES. Friday. In the Magistrate's Court to-day, Norman Bardsley, motor mechanic, was charged with drunkenness while in charge of a motor-car in, the main street of Thames on August 4. Constable White said that at 12.25 a.m. on August 4 he found accused asleep at the wheel of the car, with his head and arms hanging over the side of the vehicle. He was ordered out of the car and staggered about in a drunken manner. He was arrested and placed in the cells. Fifteen minutes after admission to tho cells accused was again fast asleep.
Constable Nicol stated that accused had previously been warned for this failing. The magistrate, Mr. S. L. Paterson, commented on the fact that accused had not attempted to drive the car. and imposed a fine of £5 and costs. Mr. E. J. Clendon, on behalf of accused, who had pleaded guilty, asked for suppression of his name. No order was made.
