"THE LOST CONTINENT."

SEARCH FOR ATLANTIS. [FROJI OUR, OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] NEW YORK. July 25. A scientific search has begun for the lost continent Atlantis. Harvard geographers and oceanographcrs, sailing to the Azores, hope to determine, by study of dredgings, whether the continent of tradition and folk lore really existed, and whether there was once a land communication between Europe and Africa and the Americas. The story of Atlantis dates back to Homer and Horace, and that passage in Plato's "Timaeus," which reads: "And there was an island situated in front of the straits, which you call the columns of Heracles: the island was larger than Libya and Asia put together, and was the way to other islands. Now in this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonderful empire, which had rule over the whole island, and subjected parts of Libya, as far as Egypt, and Europe, as far as Tyrrhenia. Afterwards, there occurred violent earthquakes and floods, and, in a single day and night, the island of Atlantis disappeared and was sunk beneath the sea." Fifty years ago, Ignatius Donnelly wrote: "Atlantis, the Antediluvian World," in which he declared the lost continent was the Garden of Eden, and the Olympus of the Greeks. He even suggested that Ireland was> populated by 'people going north front Atlatitis.
