BRITISH WOOD IMPORTS.
ADVICE TO EMPIRE GROWERS DOMINION RESEARCH PRAISED. Australian Press Association—United Service LONDON, Aug. 16. The Imperial Economic Committee in its report on limber says the annual value of British imports is £67,000,000. Of these 95 per cent, of the softwoods and 70 per cent, of the hardwoods arc of foreign origin. Regularity in supply, most careful grading and sufficiency of quantity arc the prime conditions for success in increasing the Empire trade. Public bodies and large companies can effectively exercise voluntary preference in favour of Empire timbers, but in order to save useless expense thero should be a policy of restraint in regard to the number of varieties of new Empire timbers which are introduced.
The report emphasises the value of Australian and New Zealand research work into timbers in co-operation with tho universities.
