TRAIL OF THE STORM.
DAMAGE INXHUTT VALLEY. RAILWAY STILL DISLOCATED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] WELLINGTON, Friday.
Except for the break in the railway connection in the Hutt Valley, everything is fairly normal to-day after the storm. Gangs went out in all directions yesterday to repair the damage, restore electric circuits and clear slips and fallen trees. The steam shovel has a long task ahead in dealing with the big slip oil the Hutt Road, and only one-way traffic is possible. It looks as if there are many tons of loose rock still to.'come down, the railway deviation work having made a dangerous "face" to the elijf. Many of the breaches in the Hutt railway were enlarged yesterday by the pounding of the seas. Estimates of the time necessary to repair the lines *ary widely. Some kind of service will doubtless be established on the inner se of rails, perhaps within a week, but ) will be long before the double track is again in use. Private cars and other vehicles are assisting in transport by carrying people to and from work. Trains come only as far as Petone, whence buses and other conveyances have to be used. There is great heartburning because holders of season tickets on the railways have to pay bus fares. , Curiously enough, many people na\o failed to realise the extent of the railway dislocation. They turned up ,l the . Hutt Valley stations as usual ana were surprised to find there would 1)6 trains to take them to town.
