SHIP RETURNS TO PORT.
THE WAIPORI- MARU.
BAD WEATHER ENCOUNTERED,
COAL SHORTAGE FEARED. The unexpected return to port yesterday afternoon of the Japanese steamer Waipori Maru, -which sailed for Newcastle on Tuesday, caused some excitement and speculation on the waterfront, until it was revealed that the vessel had put back to bunker. Formerly the Union Company's Waipori, the Waipori Maru left Auckland at 11.20 a.m. on Tuesday for Newcastle, where she was to load coal for Manilla. Strong head winds and rough seas were encountered after leaving the Hauraki Gulf, and by five o'clock on Thursday evening the vessel had made only 170 miles. Fearing the continuance of adverse westerly weather in the Tasman Sea, and the rapid depletion of the bunkers, Captain Genichi Nakagawa decided to return to Auckland. Before six o'clock on Thur3day evening the vessel was steaming 10 knots back to port, and with favourable winds made the distance in very good time. " We have had no mishaps at all," the captain stated. " Everything went very well, but it is better to be sure than sorry." The Waipori Maru will take aboard 150 tons of coal to-day and will sail this afternoon for Newcastle.
