"CHINAMAN" CONDEMNED.
A discussion in the Spectator upon the propriety or otherwise of the use of tho word " Chinaman " developed in an almost unanimous condemnation of the practice. A correspondent who regarded " Chinese" as incontestably correct reminded readers of the curious fact that, in the eighteenth century, the plural, "Chineses," was in use; and another correspondent quotes from Milton's " Paradise Lost " (Book 111, L. 438) Where Chinese drive with ; sails and wind their cany waggdns light."
