MORE TRAMCARS.

TWENTY-FIVE NECESSARY. CITY COUNCIL'S APPROVAL. "BETTER TIMES APPROACHING." Emphasising the urgent necessity for additional tramway rolling stock, the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, expressed tho opinion, in a report before the City Council last evening, that no timo should bo lost in providing ways and means for an extensive . car-building programme. At least 25 of the 50 cars previously approved by the council should be laid down as soon as possible, as it took approximately nine months to obtain delivery of tho first of a number of cars after authority had been given for the work to proceed. Mr. Ford said there was a prospect of better times approaching, and tho existing rollingstock was inadequate to meet tho demands of an increasing traffic. Tho manager's recommendation was en dorscd by tho Tramways Committer, which reported it would bring down further recommendations on tramway do velopment.

Reporting, at tho instance of Mr. A. J. Stalhvorthy, on tho question of linking tho Domain with tho transport system, particularly with a view to giving easie> access to the new museum. Mr. Ford pointed out there was a frequent tram service on the Parnell route, which ht> deemed adequate. He recommended, however that notices bo displayed at the tram-stop at the Domain Drive and at the safety zone in Customs Street East giving directional information. Arrangements could always be made at short notice to cater for traffic to special functions at tho Domain. These recommendations were adopted Referring to the municipal fleet of buses, the manager's report stated that of the 106 buses taken over from the opposition proprietors, 56 vehicles are past their economic life as buses, and have been scrapped. The remaining 50 are in the last'year of their economic life, and provision should be made without delay for the necessary replacements.
