COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL.
THE AUCKLAND SOCIETY. GOOD ENTRIES RECEIVED. Highly satisfactory entries have been received for the musical and elqcutionary festival of the Auckland Competitions Society, which will open on Thursday, August 23. Yesterday was the closing date for entries, but the number received is not yet available. Last year there were 3000 competitors in the various sections, and it is expected there will be a similar number this year There was the usual rush of lastminute entries at the society's office yesterday. the staff being kept very busy. Owing to difficulty in obtaining one of the three halls—the Town Hall, the concert chamber, and the Unity Hall—which are to be used, little time was given intending competitors to forward their entries. Under these circumstances tho society is prepared to extend a greater degree of latitude in regard to late entries. Forms posted yesterday will ba accepted, whilo local entries will bo received up to to-morrow morning. At the request of people prominent in literary and debating circles, the society has agreed to provido two special classes, for impromptu speaking and for im promptu debating. Entries for these classes will bo accepted until the judging of the classes.
